The Orchard Street Press is pleased to announce the release of Modern Tapestries, Medieval Looms, the exciting new collection of poems from Carol Milkuhn of Saratoga Springs, NY

Nancy Richardson, author of An Everyday Thing, says of Modern Tapestries, Medieval Looms: “Her (Milkuhn’s) narrative poems of the times of Henry VIII and his unfortunate wives are told by gardeners, weavers, or painters, and her descriptions are so artful and sensuous that one is transported into that long-ago time…Her creative talent is extended to other stories in other centuries: the music of Jane Austen’s time that allows love to bloom; the exquisite descriptions of food in “Bon Appetit.” One can almost taste the ‘lemon slices sugared in champagne.’…Throughout the book, Milkuhn places poems of her own travel and life as a means to bring the descriptive and historical work back to life as it is lived now. The poet seeks a reason to ‘hope’ in these poems, and that reason is here in these richly rendered poems that bring to us, through all our senses, a
‘divine connection’ with the past.”

George Longenecker, President of the Poetry Society of Vermont and author of Star Route, notes that: “Skillful as a weaver, Carol Milkuhn creates a colorful tapestry of poetry that seamlessly threads medieval into modern. These are poems rich in imagery, history, and art.”

About the author: Long fascinated by the relationship between the past and the present, Carol Milkuhn turned to this subject when she picked up a pen, finding voice in both poetry and prose. Writing the poem “Anne Boleyn”s Dressmaker” was a turning point. The needlewoman who tells
the Queen’s story in time becomes Cordelia Sheldon, the main character in Milkuhn’s novel A Tapestry of Queens. Then, in her first poetry chapbook, The Company of Queens, she tells the stories of all six of Henry VIII’s wives juxtaposing their lives with the lives of twentieth century queens, finding many similarities, many commonalities with these women and their famous forbearers.

A former English teacher, Carol holds a master’s degree from the University of Michigan and has studies at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
